Satsuma Vidro-Satsuma Cut Glass-Sakurajima Sake Cup-Black

This sake cup is made to look like Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima.
Sakurajima, a volcanic mountain, is carved in black and brown, representative of the new Satsuma cut glass.
It can be used not only as a sake cup but also as a bowl for serving food.

What is Satsuma cut glass?
Using crystal glass, colored glass is fused to the surface of colorless glass by 1 mm or more.
The colored glass is then deeply cut and carefully polished, and the product is called "Satsuma cut glass."
Satsuma cut glass is characterized by the gradation, or "blurring," that occurs between the clear glass and the colored glass because of the thickness and light color of the covered colored glass.

Satsuma faceted glass was made from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period.
Today, various designs of Satsuma cut glass are produced as a traditional craft of Kagoshima Prefecture.
